So You Want to Start a Fashion Brand in India? Here’s What No One Tells You
Share
Welcome to our Wari Club - the woven magic of fashion entrepreneurship — equal parts dreamy and daring, like draping a sari in the middle of a sandstorm. At Wari, we don't just stitch fabrics — we stitch a vision. And if you’re here, reading this blog on our little corner of the internet, maybe a similar fire is flickering in you too.
Let’s talk about what it really takes to build a fashion brand in India, an insight of our own personal experience that went into and is still going into building Wari — the highs, the heartbreaks, and the magic that makes it all worthwhile.
🟠The Dream is Real — But so is the work!
Everyone loves the idea of starting a fashion brand — the mood boards, the showrooms, the Instagram-worthy photo shoots. But let’s get real: what truly builds a brand is what happens behind the seams (see what we did there ;) )
With Wari, we aren't backed by celebrity stylists or glossy magazines or influencer tie-ups. We are driven by a clear purpose: to craft ethnic wear that’s minimal, comfortable, and premium — for women like us. The modern Indian woman who’s mindful of her lifestyle, proud of her roots, and tired of itchy Indian clothes (been there?).
If you want to build something lasting, start with “why”. Why this brand? Why now? Why you? Once you have your “Why” figured out, then the action begins!
We started Wari because we were tired of choosing between pretty and practical — Indian wear that looked great but felt stiff, itchy, expensive or just not us. Wari is our way of bringing you clothing that’s effortless, elegant, and made for real women doing real things — from poojas to parties, from rakhi dinners to chai dates. Every piece is handcrafted by women in rural India, not just to support livelihoods, but to celebrate the quiet magic of feeling good in what you wear.
🟠Why India is a Land of Endless Fashion Possibilities
India is a treasure chest for fashion entrepreneurs. From Varanasi silks to Kutch embroidery, every thread carries legacy. But it’s also a crowded market — and your voice needs to be loud, clear, and bold.
Our advice? Don’t just “launch” a clothing label. Solve a problem. Wari saw a gap — traditional wear was too flashy, too uncomfortable, or too dated. So, we created something that felt like home but looked like a runway.
Pro tip: Your USP (unique selling point) needs to do two things — connect emotionally and deliver functionally.
🟠The Fashion Business 101 They Don’t Teach in Design School
Starting a fashion brand in India isn’t just about beautiful designs — it’s about knowing how to source fabric, manage tailors and artisans, market on social media, understand margins, navigate GST, and ship orders to the remotest areas without losing your mind.
Here’s what we learned:
- Build strong vendor relationships: Trust is your currency. Our vendors are people we have been working with for years! Building that trust and respect is extremely important because fashion is interdependent with various teams across various professions, so know how to communicate and be respectful and make good relations - it takes time, but so worth it.
- Create small collections. Test. Learn. Tweak. Since we have just begun Wari, we are still testing out what works best and what doesn't and trying to attract a wide customer base who have various tastes and preferences, so coming up with smaller collections helps us control costs and carry out how to deliver better.
- Invest in branding early. A good logo and a better story go a long way. Listen, we are still learning, but from the beginning we knew our little Orange bindi is our go to stand out (notice them as pointers for this blog). It's small but memorable, and it's a start - small steps but in the right direction.
- Talk to your customer constantly. DMs; feedback, reviews — gold. This is key to the entire business, you can create the most stunning outfits and the trendiest styles but if your customer doesn't want them, then its back to drawing board. Customers are what makes your brand a success, listen to them, always!
- Stay consistent. Pretty things fade; purpose-driven brands endure. It's easy to lose hope and be demotivated, and it happened to us as well - we are not influencers selling out on the first day, or have celebrities or investors backing us up - it's just us, every rupee spent is important so when things don't go according to our plan, it hurts, but you have to push forward and move on, progress over perfection and if you don't show up for yourself, nobody else will! Keep moving!
🟠 Selling in the Age of Reels and Realness
Instagram is your runway now. If you’re starting a fashion brand in 2025, know this: content is queen. From behind-the-scenes reels to customer try-ons and slow fashion storytelling — your brand must be seen, felt, and shared.
At Wari, our photoshoots celebrate real women in real moments — market sourcing, the collection development, real images without all the photoshop. Authenticity scales faster than trends.
And yes, invest in a great website. It adds trust and showcases all your products together with all their relevant information (like an online lookbook if you may).
🟠 Why Passion is the Most Underrated Business Strategy
When you’re six cups of coffee deep, trying to fix a last-minute shipment or dealing with a stitching error, passion is what keeps you sane. Wari isn’t just a business — it’s a love letter to Indian womanhood, mindful choices, and comfort first style.
If you’re dreaming of building a fashion brand in India — start with heart, back it with hustle, and never stop learning.
